NILMDTS Annual Funds Drive

As some of you know, I am involved with Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep ("NILMDTS"), a charitable organization that provides complimentary photography services to families experiencing the loss or anticipated loss of an unborn or newborn child. The photographs are a great source of comfort and healing for the families in the weeks and months following their overwhelming loss.

I have been commissioned for two such sessions in the past few months. On the one hand, I am very selfishly relieved that I have not had more. As the mother of 3 small children, I am absolutely shaken to the core every time I view the images or recall my time spent with the families - especially the little ones. On the other, though, I deeply believe NILMDTS provides an invaluable service. I am grateful for the opportunity to provide these sessions, and my dear husband (who produces a beautiful DVD presentation for the families) and I will continue our involvement as long as we are physically and emotionally able.

Below is information I received regarding NILMDTS's annual funds drive. Please take a minute to look it over. Also, if you are interested in learning more about NILMDTS, please visit http://www.nilmdts.org/.

With the Month of October being recognized as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, The Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep Foundation holds its Annual Fund Drive for six weeks starting in mid-September and ending in October.

President Ronald Reagan enacted Proclamation 5890 in October of 1988 to recognize that each year, approximately a million pregnancies in the United States alone end in miscarriage, stillbirth, or the death of a newborn child. Reagan stated, "A national observance offers us the opportunity to increase our understanding of the great tragedy involved in the deaths of unborn or newborn babies. It also enables us to consider how, as individuals and communities, we can meet the needs of bereaved parents and family members... " To read the full Proclamation signed by Reagan, CLICK HERE.

If you are in a place to make even a small contribution to NILMDTS, please know that doing so will continue to allow the organization to provide improved resources, training, communication, and other tools necessary in support of our amazing contingent of professional photographers who provide the gift of free remembrance portraiture to families in need. NILMDTS's next project is an online, interactive webinar version of our Formal NILMDTS Training taught by Co-Founder Sandy Puc', which will allow anyone in any country with access to a computer to complete the course online. Donations help make programs like this a reality!

Babypalooza::COMPLIMENTARY SESSIONS

Gosh, I know it has been ages since I last posted! The whole site-going-down thing threw me completely out of whack! It was "only" down for 4 days, but it absolutely drove me crazy!!

Anyway, so last weekend we participated in Babypalooza - a baby expo held at Brookwood mall. Somehow it had flown under my radar until about 12 days before the event - TWELVE DAYS! There was so very much to do to get ready and so little time to do it, but we pulled it off for the most part.

So many fun families stopped by our booth. So many, in fact, that I ran out of business cards - and I had 450 (so for those of you who got a handwritten business card, please forgive me). To all of you who stopped by, thanks so much for the feedback - it was so great to hear that you love what we are doing!

As a lot of you know, I am giving complimentary photography sessions to 3 very lucky people who visited us at the expo. I will announce those winners Monday (the 22nd), so be sure to check back. I will also email (or "snail mail" those who didn't list an email address) the winners. How *fun* that is going to be!!!

HOLIDAY CARDS & WEBSITE UPDATE

For those of you who have checked my blog for the holiday cards you have noticed they're not yet up!! Since last Thursday I have had ongoing issues with my website and email, which I learned yesterday have been caused by a failing server with my hosting company. They are still working to get no telling how many sites back online (mine included), but this little snag has set me back a couple days.

Please feel free to shoot me an email at my alternate address (monicacarrollphotography@yahoo.com) - I'll be happy to email you when the designs are up!! Thanks so much for your patience!

Today I met an Angel . . .

Noah Jackson Lauer was born August 17, 2007. Several months ago, Noah was diagnosed with a rare degenerative brain disorder. From what I understand, Noah's disease progressed more rapidly than even his doctors anticipated, and he has been on a ventilator for at least a couple weeks. Earlier this week, his parents contacted me because they made the excruciating decision to take Noah off the ventilator. (Note: for those who are unaware, I am an affiliate photographer with Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep, a non-profit organization that provides photography services to families experiencing the loss of a baby.)

Noah was taken off his ventilator this morning, and I arrived around 9:30 a.m. to photograph this beautiful family. I spent less than an hour with the Lauers, but my time with them has changed me forever. I was immediately captivated by Little Noah.

My purpose was to photograph Noah with his parents, so I spent very little time interacting with him, but he stole my heart - every perfect little ounce of him. After the session, Noah's nurse, Amy, shared with me her perspective: what a gift from God to have shared with Noah some of his last few moments here.

Noah's little body was tired, and now he is at peace. He has been perfectly healed. God called Noah home just a few minutes before 1 p.m. today.

I cannot fathom the pain his parents are experiencing. Please pray for peace and comfort for all those who love Noah. If you would like to visit their blog, you can find it here: http://thelauers03.blogspot.com.

Remember when I said to keep your eyes peeled?

Here's a good reason why:

The first person to email me (monica@monicacarroll.com) and reference this post will receive a COMPLIMENTARY SESSION!!!!!

Woohoo!

monica

*note: the session must occur on or before September 15, 2008

EDIT: MONICA G. WON THIS SESSION WITH HER EMAIL AT 12:45 pm TODAY (8/17). FOR THOSE WHO HAVE EMAILED ME SINCE THEN, KEEP WATCHING. YOU HAVEN'T LOST OUT!!

SOHO soho

Had a fabulous session recently with a couple of fabulous kiddos . . . We had so much fun (or at least I did, but I think they did, too) during our shoot. Too bad the ice cream shoppe wasn't open - I think that would have been the perfect ending to our perfect session!!

one of the *many* things I love about my job!

every single day I think about how much I love what I do. how could I not? I get to play with babies and kids all the time! one of my very favorite things is to see one of those new mommies who is in complete awe of her new little one.

of course, all of the mommies whose babies I photograph are completely in love with their little angels. sometimes, though, the adoration is palpable. I had one of those sessions recently with Baby B and his mommy. during our session I just got the overwhelming feeling she was born to be a mommy. I bet you can feel it, too . . .

Pretty in Pink!

This was my second session with these triplets, and I had so much fun! I am always amazed by how multiples interact with one another even at such a young age. Several times I looked up and saw the girls holding on to one another. I'm sure their parents and grandparents see it all the time, but it was a fun observation for someone who is not used to being around them!!

Nothing sweeter . . .

Is there anything sweeter than a sleeping baby?

Seriously. The boys get all the gorgeous characteristics. Check out these lips - Baby C. gets them from his beautiful mother, and they are just perfect.

Babies everywhere!!

I have been absolutely COVERED UP with newborns lately, and I love it! I am not anywhere near done editing the sessions, but I plan to post some sneak peeks for the mommies as I come across ones I just love.

These images are from a session I shot with baby V. a few days ago. Baby V's grandmother actually contacted me to schedule the session, and I am so glad she did. This family is too cute. I can't wait to watch little V. grow!!

SO MANY EXCITING THINGS . . .

I have so many exciting things going on . . . obviously, I have a new blog.

I just returned from an AMAZING weekend in Chicago. I spent the weekend learning from one of THE best children's photographers in the country - Audrey Wouldard (click her name to see her site). Just to name something you might recognize, she photographed a recent Pottery Barn Kids advertising campaign. Also, if I identified a celebrity family who recently sought her out to photograph them you'd absolutely flip. But I don't think I should tell - I don't want to risk getting her in trouble with the family. ;-D

I just can't say enough about the weekend and some of the folks I met there. I'll try to post some of the images from the weekend soon.

Also, I'm getting ready to launch a NEW WEBSITE!!! I love, love, love it, and I'm working feverishly to get it ready to go live. You'll definitely see the difference when it's up!

I'll post again soon.

Cutie!

I am back at my quest to blog occasionally. I have a lot of fun things going on - one of which is the *no session fee* promotion I’m running for maternity and newborn sessions shot during the months of June and July. The email only went out last night, and I have had a fantastic response!!
Here are a couple of my faves from a recent session with baby C. I photographed him as a newborn, so it’s hard for me to believe he is already so big!! C. is such a happy little boy, and it looks like he is going to be crazy-smart like his parents. Congratulations to his mother, by the way, who graduated from law school this past Saturday. This is not her first graduate degree, either - she is brilliant!

I can’t wait for Mom and Dad to see the rest of the images from our session!

FUN AT THE ZOO!!!

This is my first blog post EVER, but I am so excited about my recent session that I figured now is as good a time as any. Yesterday I had a wonderful session with two fantastic kids!! They showed me around the zoo, and I could tell they've been there more than a few times. The kids, B (7 1/2) and Z (almost 6), were amazing. B seemed to take to me immediately. Z, on the other hand, needed a little time to figure out I was not the enemy. ;>D I absolutely fell in love with these two, and I can't wait to post a couple of my favorite images. I'll just have to figure out how first!! Stay tuned . . . Okay, it took me forever, but here are a few of the images from our Zoo session. I'd say they are some of my favorites, but - and this is no exaggeration - every image from the session qualifies as a "favorite" for me!! I know - how could that be possible?? I have no idea, but it happened.
